Myopia Management

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition where distant objects appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. It occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Myopia often begins in childhood and can progress rapidly, especially during the school years. Managing myopia is crucial to not only improve your child’s vision now but also to reduce the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

At Chagrin Valley Optometrists, we offer myopia management services in Chagrin Falls to help slow or stop myopia progression in children. We believe in a proactive approach to myopia management, working closely with families in the Chagrin Valley area to monitor and manage myopia effectively. Dr. Lewis has been practicing myopia management for the past 15 years, and she is committed to staying at the forefront of new developments in the field. She uses biometry to track the axial length of the eye, providing her with valuable information about how effective our treatments are in slowing down eye growth.

Importance of biometry in myopia management

Biometry is paramount in myopia management because it provides objective data on how the eye is changing. By regularly measuring eye growth, Dr. Lewis can evaluate the effectiveness of treatments like MiSight™ lenses or orthokeratology (ortho-k) and make adjustments as needed. This personalized approach allows us to effectively slow down the growth of your eye and reduce the progression of myopia over time.

Many practices that offer myopia management do not use biometry. This can lead to less accurate treatment and outcomes that may not fully address your child’s needs. At Chagrin Valley Optometrists, we’re dedicated to setting a higher standard by incorporating biometry into our practice. Here are some of the treatment options we offer for myopia control:

Low dose atropine eye drops

Low dose atropine eye drops are an effective treatment option for managing myopia in children. These drops are used once daily and have been shown to significantly slow the progression of myopia. At Chagrin Valley Optometrists, we will carefully monitor your child’s response to the treatment to ensure its effectiveness and adjust as needed.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k)

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, uses specially designed rigid contact lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea while your child sleeps. When they remove the lenses in the morning, their cornea retains the new shape, allowing them to see clearly throughout the day without needing glasses or regular contact lenses. But ortho-k does more than just correct vision temporarily; it also helps to slow down myopia progression. By gently reshaping the cornea, ortho-k reduces the eye’s tendency to elongate, which is the primary cause of myopia progression.

MiSight® 1 day contact lenses

MiSight® soft contact lenses are specifically designed for myopia control in children. These daily disposable lenses have been clinically proven to slow the progression of myopia. This is the first and only soft contact lens approved by the FDA to slow myopia progression in children eight to twelve years old at the beginning of treatment. Over a period of three years, children in this age group who wore MiSight® 1 day lenses experienced an average reduction of 59% in myopia progression.

Dr. Lewis is currently participating in a three-year FDA clinical registry study for MiSight® lenses. New patients may have the opportunity to be a part of this study, which aims to slow down eye growth and preserve vision.
