As you get older, your risk for some eye diseases and conditions increases. One common eye condition that affects many people as they age is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This progressive disease can lead to central vision loss and significantly impact daily activities. AMD has no early symptoms, and you may not realize you have a problem until it is more advanced. Types of AMD
Dry AMD is the most common form and happens when cells in the macula break down over time, leading to a gradual loss of central vision. On the other hand, wet AMD is less common but more severe. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, causing sudden vision changes. Both types can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.
Treatment for age-related macular degeneration
For dry AMD, there is currently no cure. However, certain lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet high in antioxidants and wearing sunglasses to protect against UV rays can help slow its progression. Additionally, we may recommend taking certain supplements like vitamins C and E to support eye health.
For wet AMD, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injections are an effective treatment option. These injections help reduce the growth of abnormal blood vessels and prevent further vision loss. Another option is laser therapy to seal leaking blood vessels.
